A custom-built cabin on a Minnesota lake combines modern mountain and Scandinavian styles

When our family outgrew our beloved 800 sqf 1940s cabin, we decided to build our dream lake home on the same lot in Northern Minnesota from the ground up.

We were concerned that the new build might feel ‘too new’ for our family cabin. So, we designed this home with a story to tell – a tale of nostalgia, old-world charm, and family history. Taking inspiration from Scandinavian simplicity and the use of local materials in modern mountain architecture, we crafted a space that leaves a lasting impression and holds deep meaning.

The woodwork was reclaimed from a handful of family farms, underwent a time-intensive bleaching process, and then custom-milled for our home. Old cast iron kitchen sinks were restored and repurposed in bathrooms for a touch of history. And our must-have wood-burning fireplace sits where the original fireplace sat.

This cabin comfortably sleeps 16 people – perfect for hosting big parties! Guests love the custom-built bunk room with more reclaimed wood and colorful lake-themed wallpaper. Custom cabinetry and lighting were inspired by DeVol kitchens, with moody colors, cupboard latches, and delicate pendant lights handcrafted in their ceramics studio.

Sometimes basements can feel less important in terms of design, but we think they should be a space where people want to comfortably gather. An oversized sectional (with performance fabric!) sits in front of our gas fireplace which is finished with Venetian plaster to add dimension and give that wall a soft and natural minimalistic look.

To keep the commons area downstairs dry and prevent water damage from wet feet, we used waterproof LVP flooring. And, to maximize storage, we hid closets on both sides of the downstairs bar and even installed a garage attic ladder, doubling storage for all of our water toys out there.

Friends and family love having conversations around a small fire table on the screened-in porch — a must-have for Minnesota summers. We chose IPE decking, a Brazilian hardwood known for its beautiful brown and amber colors, instead of a maintenance-free option because we think IPE doesn’t get as hot – and our deck faces West, so it can get very hot.

Despite the heat, visitors can enjoy the scenery from both inside and outside, as both areas were created to maximize our view. We’ve come to love our new family cabin as much – or even more – as our original treasured place.
